Chelsea has the potential to lose its position in third in the 2021-2022 Premier League standings if they fail to make the most of the last two matches. One of them is when they host Leicester City in the 37th round, Thursday 19 May 2022 starting kick-off at 8pm local time at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea have looked somewhat of a slump in the final weeks of the EPL season, winning just one of their last four league games (2 draws, 1 loss) and failing to win the FA Cup trophy after being beaten by Liverpool on penalties. Similar to what happened in the Carabao Cup final, the Blues again had to hand over the FA Cup title to Liverpool after Cesar Azpilicueta and Mason Mount failed to get the ball into the opponent’s goal in a penalty shootout.
The negative result came just after Thomas Tuchel’s side managed to stop their three-game winless streak in successive league games by beating Leeds United 3-0 through Mason Mount, Christian Pulisic and Romelu Lukaku. The addition of three points makes Chelsea maintain its position in third with a two-point advantage over Tottenham, who had already finished 37th week.
To stay away from the threat of Spurs, Chelsea need to win when they host Leicester in the middle of this week. The problem is, Stamford Bridge has recently been less friendly with Lukaku and his friends who have only managed to make four wins among the last 12 home games in front of their fans (6 draws, 2 defeats).
On the other hand, Leicester City has also not shown a special stunning appearance in away games. Only three wins have been recorded by Brendan Rodgers’ men in the last 15 visits in the domestic league competition (5 draws, 7 defeats).
One of the wins was recorded while visiting Watford in the last league game. The five goals scored by Jamie Vardy and Harvey Barnes braces and James Maddison’s single goal could not be matched by Joao Pedro’s early goal.
The additional three points make the Foxes in 9th place, a big chance to shift Wolves’ position in 8th place if they are able to beat Chelsea. Unfortunately, the door to European competition next season has closed after West Ham United created an eight-point gap that was impossible to catch through the last two games.
