Song Kang Ho, Kang Dong Won, and Lee Ji Eun set off on a journey to deliver an abandoned baby to his new parents in the South Korean film Broker. The film, which premiered at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, can be seen in the local cinemas and festivals of selected countries starting June.

With a story surrounding a special “baby box” used for leaving unwanted babies, Broker is a criticism form of Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda (Shoplifters, Nobody Knows) toward the adoption system in his home country. In collaboration with Zip Cinema and CJ Entertainment, the film was produced in South Korea, which has a similar adoption system.

Broker features well-known Korean actors in the main cast. Song Kang Ho, who previously played in the Oscar-winning film Parasite (2019), made a new achievement by winning the Best Actor award for Broker at the Cannes event. His co-star, Kang Dong Won, acted in many popular Korean films, including the sequel to Train to Busan, Peninsula (2020). And not to forget Lee Ji Eun, better known as musician IU, who often plays the main role in drama series such as Hotel del Luna (2019) and is starting her career in feature films.

In addition to the three traveling companions, veteran actress Bae Doona (Air Doll) and rising young actress Lee Joo Young (Itaewon Class) also make appearances in this film. Broker is planned to be released in several countries with a premiere schedule lasting until the end of the year.

Broker Storyline

In addition to his seemingly simple launderette, Sang Hyeon (Song Kang Ho) runs a side business. At the church where Sang Hyeon often helps as a volunteer, there is a special box for anonymously dumping babies. Taking the babies in this box, Sang Hyeon and his friend Dong Soo (Kang Dong Won) become brokers, acting as intermediaries for unwanted babies and parents who can afford and care for them.

When a young mother, So Young (Lee Ji Eun) sees and accuses Sang Hyeon and Dong Soo of being criminals who are kidnapping the baby she just left, they try to convince her that the baby’s prospective parents are good people. To confirm their words, So Young wants to tag along their trip to escort her child.
