A mysterious serial kidnapper, a sleepy suburban town, the 1970s. The chilling combination comes to haunt in the The Black Phone, a new supernatural horror film starring Ethan Hawke. Set to be screened internationally, the film will arrive in the US on June 24, 2022.

In his possibly first antagonist role, Ethan Hawke put on a mask as The Grabber, a child kidnapper who spreads terror in a residential area. This ongoing kidnapping gets different responses from the Shaw siblings, Finney (Mason Thames) and Gwen (Madeleine McGraw). Until, Finney himself becomes one of the victims.

After helming Marvel’s superhero film Doctor Strange, director Scott Derrickson returns to his element, creating a slow-paced horror film combining personal experiences and Joe Hill’s original short story. The Sinister director is back working with producer Jason Blum under Blumhouse Productions (Paranormal Activity, Insidious, Get Out). With the minds of the horror duo, coupled with Hawke’s phenomenal performance, The Black Phone is introducing an iconic modern day villain who will be remembered for a long time.

The Black Phone Storyline

The Grabber (Ethan Hawke) is his name, whispered from family to family, in a small suburban town in Colorado. Suspected as the perpetrator behind the disappearance of five children, whose life and death status is unknown, The Grabber brews fear and distress in the neighborhood. Including for Finney Shaw (Mason Thames), a 13-year-old boy who is anxious even when he sees posters of missing children. Gwen Shaw (Madeleine McGraw), his sister, is much more skeptical of the ‘ghost story’.

However, when Finney meets a strange man who claims to be a magician, he doesn’t suspect a thing. The next second, he was put in a van and then trapped in The Grabber’s empty room. There was only a black phone accompanying Finney, but the cord had been cut.

Which is why Finney is startled when he hears voices on the other side of the line. It’s the missing children – now dead – who are trying to help him out. With the help of the spirits, Finney carries out plan after plan to escape, before he becomes the next victim. Meanwhile, Gwen, who begins to have visions of her brother, guides the adults out there in search of Finney.
